Rugby: HITIQ smart mouthguards available for junior and amateur sports
This is the first time that cutting-edge mouthguard technology has been made available to junior and amateur athletes in the country.
In the event of a health risk, the mouthguard communicates via an application to the parents and the coach
HITIQ smart mouthguards, currently used by Rugby Union, AFL and NRL players, feature force-measuring sensors that record head impacts and force buildup from blows received during a match. Combined with an easy-to-use mobile app, the system issues an alert upon detection of any severe head impact and then prompts parents to assess their child’s potential symptoms using the Symptom Screener. Screen for symptoms of concussion
Dr Dwayne Crombie, chief executive of health services at BUPA, said the technology is being made available at a time when concerns about concussions and head injuries in sport have never been higher. Depending on the results of the mouth guard screening tool, a player may be referred to an appropriate medical professional for further evaluation following a collision. When a medical professional diagnoses a player with a concussion, the HITIQ app provides guidance on managing concussion symptoms, as well as return-to-play protocols. Mike Vegar, CEO of HITIQ, said that he was proud to partner exclusively with Bupa Dental Care to bring elite sports technology to athletes of all ages and skill levels.
