Five years after their massive exodus to Bangladesh, the return of the Rohingyas to Burma is not on the agenda. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, said on Wednesday August 17 that “the conditions are not met for the return” Rohingya refugees in Burma.
In 2017, approximately 750,000 Rohingyas, muslim minority in Burma, fled army abuse and sought asylum in neighboring Bangladesh. Already more than 100,000 refugees were there, victims of previous violence. Rohingyas live in unsanitary camps, in shelters made of bamboo and tarpaulins. They refuse to return to Burma, a predominantly Buddhist country, until they are granted citizenship rights.
“Repatriation should always be carried out in a voluntary and dignified manner, only when safe and sustainable conditions exist in Burma”, added Michelle Bachelet, traveling to Dhaka, Bangladesh. Burma has been ruled by a military junta since its civilian government was ousted last year.
