Deforestation: the concern of coffee producers
Deforestation: the concern of coffee producers – (FRANCE 2)
By the end of 2024, products resulting from deforestation, such as coffee or cocoa, will be banned in Europe.
The source of coffee producers’ concern is a European regulation adopted last spring. By the end of 2024, products resulting from deforestation will be banned in Europe. Producers of coffee, cocoa, soya and even wood must be able to prove that their goods do not come from deforestation zones.
A huge market in Europe
The problem is that those mainly concerned do not yet know in what form they must declare, or even what will happen to the stocks that have already arrived on European Union soil. Coffee, cocoa and soy come from countries where there is still massive deforestation. It will take some time before changing models. Europe is a huge market. Through its imports. It is the second largest destroyer of forests in the world, behind China.
