In the middle of the electoral campaign, the National Consultative Commission on Human Rights (CNCDH) published a study which illustrates the increase in racism in France. In the street, at work or at school, discrimination is becoming more and more numerous.

Gisèle Zoha, a home help, testifies to the increase in racist acts in France. She has heard words such as “Go home, you don’t belong here.” “I tell them: ‘France does not belong to you’”, she continues. According to a report from the National Consultative Commission on Human Rights (CNCDH), between 2022 and 2023, the proportion of French people believing that there are too many immigrants increased from 53 to 56%. They also think that foreigners do not give themselves the means to integrate: the figure increases from 49 to 55%.

“This growing intolerance is worrying. It is present in words but also in actions, with racist, anti-Semitic acts, with an explosion of anti-Semitic acts since the events of October 7th,” explains Jean-Marie Burguburu, president of the CNCDH. Anti-Semitic acts have jumped by 284% in France, according to the report. Racism is punishable by law with fines of up to 75,000 euros and prison sentences in the most serious cases.
