World Holocaust Remembrance Day takes place on Saturday February 27. This year marks the 79th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz camp by Russian troops.

A duty to remember. Like every year Auschwitz (Poland), flowers and candles were placed in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, in the presence of the families of the victims or survivors. January 27 marks the World Day in Memory of the Victims, 79 years to the day after the liberation of the campAuschwitz.

The horror of the camps

Among the survivors in 1945, some were children, tattooed for life by the memory of their deportation. In total, Russian soldiers freed 7,000 survivors while more than a million victims died before their arrival. On January 27, 1945, the whole world discovered the horror of the Shoah, the extermination of Jews and minorities on an industrial scale. Most of the French deportees, who came from Drancy, were taken to these camps, including Ginette Kolinka, who strives to recount the horror of the camps, in order to perpetuate the memory of the Shoah.
