The comforting decoration trends of 2022

This text is part of the special book Plaisirs

It’s not a myth: trends, both in fashion and in decoration, are intimately linked to the moods of a society. After two turbulent years to say the least, some key interior design trends seem to be downright influenced by our need for comfort. We are thus moving away from the immaculate, cold and minimalist universes that were popular before the pandemic. Forget about floor-to-ceiling white kitchens, angular furniture and steel gray sofas; make way for enveloping and warm decors, which give pride of place to earth colors and natural materials. Analysis and inspiration.

The 2020 decade will be that of the chestnuts, predicts from the start the color expert Marie-Chantal Milette, contacted by telephone on a cold February morning. “Brown always comes back after difficult times because it’s a reassuring shade,” recalls the founder of the Kryptonie agency. So it can be assumed that this color scheme will stay with us for a long time. »

Already last year, we noted an explosion in the popularity of the terracotta shade, a brown that tends towards orange, which we had not seen for several seasons in decoration. The Pinterest platform had even recorded a 341% increase in the search for “terracotta bedroom” compared to 2020, and a simple look at the offer of major retailers is enough to convince us that this shade is still present this year.

“It’s normal to see this kind of increase, analyzes Marie-Chantal Milette. Terracotta is an earth color, which grounds us and reassures us, but it also contains a touch of red which gives us the energy to weather the storm. »

back to earth

Beyond the shades inspired by the earth, the craze for decorative accessories and furniture that evoke nature is real. Examples ? Furniture made of wood, but also raw materials that awaken a certain nostalgia in us, such as rattan, wool or leather.

“The tactile side is super important and, in this sense, natural textures are increasingly popular,” observes the artistic director of the Canadian chain Urban Barn, Sébastien Fauteux. According to him, we are looking for both armchairs in very soft bouclé fabric and extendable tables in recycled driftwood… an essential to start welcoming guests again in complete comfort.

Nor could we ignore the renewed interest in indoor plants, another way of bringing nature into our homes. “Green is another soothing color that has come back in force in our homes, but in the form of plants,” notes Marie-Chantal Milette. There were even stockouts for some plants, such as Monstera albo, with green and white foliage, which has become almost impossible to find unless you shell out crazy sums of money. »

While waiting to get our hands on a rare exotic variety, we fall back on more accessible local species, whose simple beauty will be enhanced by a cache-pot created by a local artisan.
