Until now, candidates could take the exam a maximum of three times. With the NCLEX exam, developed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), students will be able to take as many tries as possible over a four-year period.
The exam scheduled for September 2023 will still take place in its current form. Certain questions deemed problematic in the Commissioner’s investigation will however be reviewed, indicated the president of the OIIQ, Luc Mathieu.
Nearly half of nursing students (48.6%) who took the exam for the first time last September failed the exam. Commissioner André Gariépy had been tasked with investigating the reasons leading to this disproportionate failure rate.
“Our investigation revealed that the examination of the Order has flaws and weaknesses concerning its validity, its reliability and the determination of its pass mark”, said Tuesday the commissioner for admission to the professions, Mr.e Andre Gariepy. He therefore recommended reviewing the relevance and usefulness of the exam and recalculating the marks of the last exams.
While admitting that some of the elements of the current exam need improvement, OIIQ President Luc Mathieu said Thursday that students “were not well enough prepared to take the exam” in September, putting caused by the pandemic.
