The “Coderre wave” is only a prelude for the PLQ, predicts a liberal MP

The “Coderre wave” is only a prelude to the rise of the Liberal Party of Quebec (PLQ) in voting intentions, declared MP Virginie Dufour.

Mme Dufour noted the popularity of Denis Coderre, expected candidate for the PLQ leadership race, in a poll published Wednesday.

“What we see, the Coderre wave, is only the beginning for the party,” she said in a press briefing. There will be other people who can raise the party further. »

The opinion survey, commissioned by The Montreal Journal and TVA, shows that if the PLQ were led by the former mayor of Montreal, it would obtain 21% of voting intentions, compared to 15% for interim leader Marc Tanguay. Other Liberals whose names are circulating, Marwah Rizqy and Fred Beauchemin, would obtain a result similar to Mr. Tanguay.

Mme Dufour, who believes that other candidates will make themselves known, nevertheless highlighted the qualities of Mr. Coderre, whose final decision is not yet official.

“He still has a certain leadership,” she said. It is quite a very interesting candidate. »

This most recent poll from the Léger firm once again places the Parti Québécois (PQ) in the lead, with 32% support, while the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) remains in second position with a result of 25%. The support of the two parties has remained stable since Léger’s last measure in December.

The PQ, however, increased its support in the French-speaking vote, to 38%, compared to 28% for the CAQ.

The Minister of Education Bernard Drainville, who was part of the last PQ government of Pauline Marois, drew a parallel between the position of the CAQ in voting intentions and that of the PQ which, before taking power in 2012, had a hill to climb.

“I saw others,” he said while going to a CAQ caucus. I was in another party before, we ended up coming back, winning. »

Hypothetical policy

On Wednesday, PQ leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon was not worried that a quarter of voters who would support him are opposed to a referendum on sovereignty.

“We may not have convinced them completely, but clearly, we at least have their ears,” he said.

Mr. St-Pierre Plamondon repeated that the PQ intends to hold a referendum on sovereignty, but he evaded questions about maintaining this objective in the event that it is in the minority.

“You’re making me make hypothetical politics based on facts I don’t know,” he explained.

The Léger survey was conducted among 1,032 Quebecers, from February 2 to 5, 2024. Its margin of error is estimated at ± 3.05%, 19 times out of 20.
