Those who are lucky enough to live near the coast can indulge in the invigorating pleasure of a swim or an invigorating walk in the water in the middle of winter. In Hyères in the Var, fans of these rejuvenating baths meet several times a week.
This is the story of three friends in Provence. They have known each other for ten years, and what unites them is the Mediterranean Sea. “There is no one in the morning, we come to take the air with friends”, appreciates Brigitte Martinez. Their method of staying in shape: walking in the invigorating air along the beach at daybreak. But this march is not enough for them. Three times a week, they go along the coast, in Hyères (Var) for 1h30, “excellent for facilitating venous return”, indicates the supervisor Gérard Badrot.
It’s a tonic walk in the water, with small flippers in the hands, and all this in rhythm. The coach gives technical advice or corrects gestures. Relaxing, without hurting your joints, is a health asset that appeals to the over 60s. “I’m outdoors, that’s what I like. I love the water, it relieves my back and knees a lot”, explains a follower of the longe-côte. The benefits of seawater are proven on the body but also on the mind. “It’s total escape”, assures a resident. Since the health crisis, there has been an increased enthusiasm for this activity in harmony with nature.
