The Club | The groups of the World Cup, the option to the contract of Nancy and… the straitjacket under the jersey

Where is this tank top from?

Could you tell me why CF Montreal players wear a half-torso black tank top under their jersey?

Daniel Page

Response from Katherine Harvey-Pinard:

According to CF Montreal media relations manager Arcadio Marcuzzi, the sports singlet you are referring to contains a device that includes a GPS sensor. This is inserted into a compartment located between the two shoulder blades. Every player owns one and wears it in training and games. Said sensor records all player movements in great detail. The physical trainers can then study the – numerous – data and follow the workload and the recovery of each player, which then makes it possible to adapt certain training sessions. “It also makes it possible to determine recurring patterns in certain players, who could be more at risk for certain injuries, also explains Mr. Marcuzzi. For example, a full-back who cheats a bit or who gets caught on the wrong foot and has to sprint back too often, that will lead to muscle overload and he will be more prone to injury. . It makes it possible to correct certain things in the player’s game and, by the same token, to prevent injuries. »

Why decline?

In football, we often hear that a team “declines” the penalty. Explain to me under what and for what strategic reasons we act in this way.

Pierre Fournier

Response from Jean-François Téotonio:

Very simple example: the opposing quarterback throws an interception which is brought back for a touchdown. You celebrate! Yippee! But on the same play, his offensive lineman is declared offside. If this penalty is not declined, the interception brought back for a touchdown is therefore canceled. Boo. So, basically, we decline a penalty when the result of the previous game benefits us more than the penalty awarded to the opposing team.

World Cup groups

Group A game between Senegal and the Netherlands at the FIFA World Cup

How did they determine groups A, B, C, etc.? ?

Michael B.

Response from Jean-François Téotonio:

The composition of the FIFA World Cup groups was determined with a draw, on 1er last April. Each of the nations had previously been divided into four hats, a sorting based on the ranking of each of the qualified countries. For example, in the first pot were Brazil, Belgium and the five other best qualified nations, in addition to Qatar, which was there automatically. In the second, the next eight countries in the ranking. And so on. The purpose of this sorting is to ensure that the best nations do not all end up in the same groups at the end. Impossible for Brazil (1D in the world) and Belgium (2e), therefore, to compete in the group stage.

Arrives on 1er April, and the draw. After a tedious ceremony, the names of the countries were drawn randomly, but according to certain rules. A maximum of two European countries per group. Only one country from CONCACAF per group. And so on.

The famous option year

Kei Kamara (23), of CF Montreal, runs away with the ball during a game against New York City FC on October 23rd.

We often read that an athlete has signed, for example, a contract for X years, with an option year. What is this mechanism of the option and what does the fact of “engaging it” consist of, as we have read for Wilfried Nancy? Is it the club that triggers the option, and this, at a specific time?

Daniel D’Andre

Response from Jean-François Téotonio:

“An option year is a contract. This is how Olivier Renard, sports director and vice-president of CF Montreal, explains the concept. Basically, if the club is satisfied with the performance of the player – or his coach… – he can activate the option year provided for in the agreement.

That’s what he did for Kei Kamara a few days ago. Initially, the striker had signed a one-year contract with an additional year of option. At 38 and after two years in another championship, the CFM had kept a way out, in case the adventure had to end after a single season. But Kamara did well (9 goals and 7 assists in 32 games), and his leadership was a factor in the team’s success. Moreover, his contract is not very heavy. Come on, let’s renew the adventure for another year, and activate the option. Theoretically, the option year is made up of the same parameters as the base contract.

It’s an advantage for the club. Take the example of Wilfried Nancy. His option for 2023 was activated during the season. But we are still waiting to find out if the head coach will continue the adventure with Montreal. If he leaves, since the man is under contract, the team will have to receive some compensation to allow Nancy to sign a deal elsewhere.
