What happened in class?
On October 4, during a lesson in economics and social sciences, the teacher discussed in class with the students ostentatious religious signs and secularism. One of the students spoke of her difficulties in accepting the wearing of the veil. The exchange then continued informally after class between students and the teacher. “As part of the discussion, the young girl made comments which tended to justify the Charlie Hebdo attacks according to the professor”, explains the prosecutor of Mulhouse. She specifies that the exchanges with the student were without animosity.
How was the uncle notified?
This is still a question mark in the investigation. “We don’t know yet how it happened. As the young girl did not come home, her mother went to pick her up. There may have been discussions about what was said, which is why the uncle accompanied the mother.” The rest is a little clearer reports Edwige-Roux Morizot. Shortly after class, the student’s mother and uncle entered the school, “virulent remarks were exchanged, concerning the evocation of the religion in progress. The uncle addressed the professor by evoking what happened to Samuel Paty. Which was qualified, given the context, as threats of dead”, adds Edwige-Roux Morizot.
Where are the lawsuits?
Despite the denials of both. The uncle was indicted for intrusion into a school without authorization and death threat against a person in charge of a public service mission. “He was placed under judicial control, with a ban on contacting the teacher and approaching the school”, specifies the prosecutor of Mulhouse. The student had been placed in police custody at the same time as his uncle, but it had been lifted on Thursday evening. The high school student is implicated for advocating terrorism, she must be presented to an examining magistrate, with a view to her indictment.
How are the school and the teacher protected?
The uncle risks immediate incarceration if he approaches the school or the teacher underlines Edwige Roux-Morizot. On his side, the rectorate of Strasbourg
adds that “The Scheurer-Kestner high school is the subject of constant attention from the rectorate and state services, following the incident of October 4, 2022.” In a press release, it is stated that “the mobile security team is present daily to guarantee security, support the teams and provide psychological support.” It will remain in place as long as necessary. A listening cell is also open for staff within the establishment.
