The city of Ermont (Val-d’Oise) removes the portico from its Simone Veil park, reports this Tuesday, October 11, France Inter. The reason: it echoed that of Auschwitz too much. The entrance gate to the park was inaugurated at the beginning of September. It is a metal structure on which we could read the name of Simone Veil, survivor of the Holocaust. A gate that looks a lot like that of the Auschwitz extermination camp and its slogan “Work makes you free” and which caused a controversy on social networks.

In view of the extent of this controversy, the city of Ermont has therefore decided to remove the entrance gate this Tuesday. In a press release, the municipality deplores the “unfounded comments” and indicates that“no analogy or unfortunate ‘coincidence’ should be sought there”. She also claims to have consulted “the local Jewish community”, who “is surprised by this controversy, not seeing any malice in this architectural choice”. Finally, the city specifies that another sign “slender, wood-like”will be installed soon.
