The scourge of copper theft is very important on French territory. It is now the public lighting cables that are targeted by thefts. In Tours, five kilometers were stolen in a few months.

When the housing estates light up, part of the city of Tours (Indre-et-Loire) is plunged into darkness, while the public lighting no longer works. Sincehearth monththe city faces a plague, the theft of cables electricity, which reinforces a feeling of insecurity among the inhabitants. In four months, more than five kilometers of cables were stolen. What is sought is copper, which is an expensive metal, more than 7,000 euros for a ton.

250,000 euros in repairs for the city of Tours

But this degradation surprises local residents. “It’s unfortunate, it’s the public good”explains one of them. At the moment there are not enough cables in stock, while the work should cost 250,000 euros. “In these times when we are looking for money everywhere, if we add a layer like that, it’s complicated”, explains Philippe Geiger, deputy to the city. The city of Tours is reluctant to switch to solar power to fight against theft.
