The city of Bruz has decided to turn off its streetlights at night

No more light comes out of the lampposts at night in the streets of certain cities of the Rennes metropolis. They did an experiment: turn off public lighting at night, everywhere, from July 15 to August 15. The town of Bruz, south of Rennes, is taking part in the operation. The town hall wishes to collect the opinions of the inhabitants to review the operation of its public lighting.

Why turn off street lights at night?

In this experiment, the city of Bruz finds two interests: the preservation of the environment and savings. “Do we need to light up the streets at night, when people are at home? Do we need to disrupt the rhythm of animal species?” asks Jean Boutin, elected to the transition and citizen involvement.

This Thursday, July 28, we have already consumed all the resources that the planet can renew in one year. It’s called the overrun day. Every year it comes earlier and earlier.

Beyond the ecological aspect of this experience, the city of Bruz finds an economic interest in it. “The resources of the municipalities are stagnating, we are in a difficult budgetary context. We must react and save on unnecessary expenses”, said city councilor Jean Boutin. By cutting off the electricity for a month this summer, the city saves 10% of its annual budget dedicated to public lighting.

What do the locals think?

On the square, in the heart of the city, opinions differ. Young women are not at ease with the idea of going out at night in unlit streets. “I don’t feel safe”. This other resident is concerned about safety for pedestrians: “In summer, young people go out with friends, without lights, it can be dangerous if a vehicle arrives.”

Others see the ecological interest above all. “There’s no point in burning out lights if there’s no one there. It’s a good measure. It’s been 10 years since we should have turned off the lights in store windows.”
