The Citizens’ Convention on the end of life is mainly in favor of active assistance in dying in France, writes the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (Cese) in a press release, Sunday February 19. Out of 167 voters, 121 participants in the Citizens’ Convention say they are in favor of opening up access to assisted suicide. Out of 166 voters, 109 said yes to a green light for euthanasia.

The Convention has completed its deliberation phase, allowing citizens to vote “first major orientations”. “We have just passed a pivotal stage of the Citizens’ Convention”said Claire Thoury, chair of the governance committee and member of the EESC. “These key orientations now recorded, citizens will be able to develop their proposals and harmonize their response before proceeding to decision-making votes.“, she continued.

Final work session on March 19

The Citizens’ Convention on the end of life does not only focus on active assistance in dying. It also prepares proposals on palliative care, respect for the patient’s wishes, home support, information and training, and financial resources dedicated to the end of life.

The Cese reminds that citizens will meet on March 3, 4 and 5 for the 7th session. It will be followed by an 8th session on March 10, 11 and 12, before a final session on March 17, 18 and 19. The proposals will be submitted to the government.
