On Sunday April 2, 184 citizens drawn by lot submitted their end-of-life report. For three months, they worked on the question of euthanasia and assisted suicide. The majority of them are in favor of it.

184 citizens drawn by lot submitted their report on the end of life on the morning of Sunday April 2, in the hemicycle of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (Cese). For three months, they compared their thoughts and interviewed around sixty experts. They are 76% for and 23% against, both for assisted suicide and euthanasia. “The essential point is first of all the will of the patient. If the patient has not expressed a strong will in one way or another, we cannot move towards active assistance in dying“, commented a man.

A procedure to follow

The person at the end of life should make a pre-request to a doctor, followed by a period of reflection, then an official request. In the event of incapacity of the patient, these advance directives will prevail, or that of the person of trust whom he has designated. Active assistance in dying is already practiced in some European countries, such as the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Spain. Monday, April 2, Emmanuel Macron will receive the members of the citizens’ convention, and will decide whether their conclusions should be included in a new law.
