LAS VEGAS | The Chiefs accomplished what no one has done in 19 years, winning the Super Bowl two years in a row, thanks to a 25-22 overtime triumph against the 49ers in Las Vegas.

It almost seems like a Hollywood scenario, with a comeback and the usual brilliance of the duo of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, under the gaze of Taylor Swift in her dressing room, freshly arrived from Tokyo.
The last to have achieved a double at the Super Bowl were the Patriots, in 2003 and 2004. The crowd of more than 61,000 people, well behind the 49ers, could only witness once again, stunned, the magic from comeback maestro Partrick Mahomes, who walked away with his third Super Bowl MVP award.
For only the second time in Super Bowl history, the game required additional time and it was receiver Mecole Hardman who scored the touchdown that sowed hysteria, on a pass from Mahomes.
It was a second touchdown pass for the brilliant Chiefs quarterback, who again managed to make a victorious push, his trademark.
The Chiefs trailed 10-0 in the second quarter, but Mahomes orchestrated a comeback despite falling behind by at least 10 points for the 17th time in his career. He achieved this hanging shot in his last three duels against the 49ers.
“Like all season, our defense held up and the offense succeeded
big plays when it mattered. The Kansas City Chiefs are never the underdogs! » Mahomes chanted under the confetti after the victory, alluding to the fact that the Chiefs were considered the underdogs by the oddsmakers for a third straight game.

In a select club
The Chiefs quarterback thus becomes the fifth in history to win the Super Bowl three times, after Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw and Troy Aikman. He is the third, with Brady and Aikman, to do it before turning 30.
He finished the game with 333 passing yards and 66 more on the ground, including eight on a critical fourth-down conversion on the final drive.
The 49ers opened the ball with a nice push in overtime, but were slowed down at the Chiefs 9 line and had to settle for a third field goal from Jake Moody.
Travis Kelce was Mahomes’ target of choice and certainly delighted his sweetheart Taylor Swift with nine catches for 93 yards, he who had only one reception at halftime.
“We’ve had a target on our backs all year and I couldn’t be more proud of us. We have a chance to go for three in a row now, what do you say? » Kelce yelled.
Late push
The Chiefs took the lead for the first time in the game late in the third quarter thanks to a blunder by the 49ers, who lost control of the ball on a punt return. One play later, Mahomes made them pay by connecting with Marquez Valdes-Scantling for their first touchdown and it was 13-10 in their favor.
On their next sequence, the 49ers recovered well by driving down the field until Brock Purdy found Jauan Jennings for a touchdown. The special teams looked bad again, however, as their conversion punt was blocked.
The Chiefs put everyone back at square one at 16-16 with Butker’s third of four field goals. He also set a Super Bowl record with a 57-yard kick.
The Chiefs, however, made several errors which were out of character. Patrick Mahomes was notably the victim, in the third quarter, of a first interception in a playoff game since 2021.
Cornerback L’Jarius Sneed took a stupid roughing penalty after the whistle on the sequence that led to the 49ers’ first touchdown.
Carrier Isiah Pacheco fumbled the ball at the goal gate after a rare long passing play by the Chiefs. It was only the second time this season he made this mistake.
The pellets blew
Tight end Travis Kelce lost his temper on the sidelines after this play, going so far as to push his head coach Andy Reid. It’s as if the Chiefs, usually in perfect control but when things aren’t going well, have let their emotions take over. The Niners were unable to take advantage of this rare largesse.
But all’s well that ends well for Andy Reid’s squad, who finally got their hands on the fourth Vince-Lombardi trophy in their history and their third in five years.
