The fires in Greece have made a new victim on the island of Euboea. The charred body of a man was found there, Greek police announced on Tuesday (July 25th). According to a spokesperson, a police unit is going to the scene to check if it is a shepherd who has been missing since Sunday”, when forest fires broke out on this island which is not far from the capital, Athens. Earlier in the day,two pilots of a Canadair-type water bomber perished in the crash of their plane, fighting against one of the violent fires ravaging the island.

In the grip of a particularly intense heat wave, Greece is facing many devastating fires. On Sunday, 32,500 people were evacuated from the islands of Rhodes and Corfu, while many parts of the country remain “on red alert”that is to say in “extreme danger” forest fires, with temperatures reaching 44°C.

Such heat waves in the northern hemisphere would have been “almost impossible” without human-caused global warming, according to a study released Tuesday morning by World Weather Attribution scientists. Because of our greenhouse gas emissions, such events are now expected on average once every 10 years in Europe.
