What if the Charentais melon changed its name? This is the idea defended by the inter-profession, which wants the fruit to no longer be linked to its land of origin. But the Charente producers do not see it that way.
On the shelves this June, Charentais melons which come from Morocco, or even Spain. Enough to mislead certain consumers. But the term “Charentais” refers to the variety of the fruit and not its origin. The 60 Millions de consommateurs association recently relayed a photo which illustrates the confusion of buyers, pointing out a process “legal, but confusing for consumers”.
This is why the inter-professional association has been campaigning for years to rename the Charentais melon, which could be called “ribted melon”. “Producers feel a bit caught between a rock and a hard place”, explains Rémi Javernaud, head of the Interprofessional Melon Association (AIM). For the latter, the “accusations of deception are linked to ignorance of the regulations”. This change would also concern Charente producers, some of whom believe that it is not up to them to change the name of their product.
