Austria could soon confine people not vaccinated against Covid-19. Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg announced on Friday, November 12, that he was waiting for the green light from parliament on Sunday to implement this measure, which would also concern unhealed patients from Covid-19. Faced with a rapid increase in cases, the country has been seeking for several weeks to improve its vaccination rate: only 67% of the population received at least one injection and 64% received both doses (against a European average of 67%) . Alexander Schallenberg did not specify the date of the possible entry into force of the measure.

“The goal is clear: we want to give the green light to national containment for unvaccinated people on Sunday.”

The regional state of Upper Austria and the city-state of Salzburg, which have experienced some of the highest contamination rates, have already introduced this containment from Monday. For the measure to apply across the country, it will need to be approved by parliament and a meeting of regional heads of government over the weekend. The Minister of Health, Wolfgang Mueckstein, has also announced that he will order compulsory vaccination of health workers.

Austria, a very touristy Alpine country, fears being placed again on the so-called “red” list of destinations in which active circulation of the virus is observed, as the winter season begins. The city of Vienna had already banned the access of non-vaccinated or antibody-free people to restaurants and hairdressers, in order to stem a new wave of Covid-19 contamination.
