The CH let slip a four-goal lead and lost 7-6 to the Canucks

Elias Pettersson scored 13 seconds into overtime and the Vancouver Canucks pulled off a 7-6 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Monday.

Cole Caufield won the face-off kicking off the extra period but in the moments that followed, Mike Matheson lost his balance as he had the puck in his zone.

Petterson grabbed the puck, charged to the net and beat Samuel Montembeault between the pads. It was a 12th goal this season for the 24-year-old Swede.

The CH therefore screwed up a 4-0 lead acquired in 8:28, in the first third.

Andrei Kuzmenko tied the game at 18:35 in the third period, on superiority.

Accomplice of this goal, JT Miller obtained a seventh point since six meetings.

Ilya Mikheyev (twice), Conor Garland, Bo Horvat and Jack Studnicka were the other scorers for the winners.

Horvat is third in the NHL with 20 goals this season.

Spencer Martin was beaten four times on nine shots, then being replaced by Collin Delia. This one made 14 saves.

Cole Caufield, Nick Suzuki, Sean Monahan and Michael Pezzetta gave the Canadiens a four-goal lead in the opening period.

Christian Dvorak and Josh Anderson also scored for the CH, which was trying to recover from a 5-3 loss suffered in Edmonton on Saturday.

Monahan left midway through the second period and did not return to the game, but the Habs did not specify the nature of the injury.

Montembeault repelled 25 shots.

Martin St-Louis’ men will complete a four-game trip Tuesday night in Seattle.

The Kraken have won seven straight before losing 5-1 at home to the Panthers on Saturday.

Montembeault stopped a dangerous shot from Miller in the first minute. Shortly after, Studnicka wanted to thwart him by going around the net, but it was finally against Nils Aman that Montembeault made a brilliant save.

The first eight shots of the game came from the Canucks.

With Vancouver leading 8-1 in shots, CH took a 1-0 lead when Caufield beat Martin with a one-timer at 7:49 in the first period.

Captain Suzuki maneuvered down the ramp and slid to Jordan Harris.

This handed over to Caufield, who scored his 14th goal of the season.

Suzuki doubled the Habs cushion at 12:34 with a wrist shot, the puck being partially stopped by Martin. Kaiden Guhle allowed the chance with a precise long pass.

The goal was scored 10 seconds after a short power play by the Canucks, the result of a penalty to Joel Armia.

At 2:57, Monahan had his sixth point in six games.

Co-leading his team with 14 assists, Suzuki spotted Monahan in the slot, who successfully redirected the puck.

Pezzetta completed the push with his first goal of the campaign.

The 24-year-old Torontonian scored on the backhand by charging at the net after Harris headed the puck towards him. The goal was the end of the night for Martin.

Hoglander missed a golden chance on a rebound midway through the second period, hitting the post on a hard shot from Horvat.

The Canucks gave hope to their fans late in the middle period, with two goals in 1:44.

Garland scored with a nice fake and Mikheyev completed a skillful pass from Elias Pettersson, coming from behind the net.

In the third period, the Canucks closed the gap with two more quick goals, this time in 1:43.

Horvat took advantage of a puck that had just given against a skate from Hoglander and Mikheyev converted on reception a pass from Pettersson. The score then became 4-4.

In the middle of the period, Montembeault was slow to make a decision by going to get the puck behind the goal. Studnicka blocked the punt attempt against the boards and scored a second goal this season rounding the net.

Dvorak made it 5-5 on the rebound of a shot by Evgenii Dadonov at 15:23, then Anderson gave the team the lead by shooting on a 2-on-1. The puck touched two rivals before entering the net.

Johnathan Kovacevic was punished with 1:32 to go, however, and then Kuzmenko took the opportunity to bring everyone back to square one.

The Canucks were wrapping up a four-game home stint. Bruce Boudreau’s squad will play again on Wednesday in San Jose.
