The CFL places the Montreal Alouettes under guardianship

The Canadian Football League placed the Montreal Alouettes under conservatorship on Tuesday. In a press release, the league added that former Alouettes president Mario Cecchini will be the team’s interim president.

“Cecchini will manage the day-to-day operations of the affairs of the organization under the direction and supervision of the league office,” the CFL statement read.

Danny Maciocia has retained his position as general manager, it has been said.

The Ambrosie Circuit added that an accelerated and formal sale process is being led by its partner Park Lane, a specialist sports investment bank and leading advisory firm whose clients include major league sports properties from across the the planet.

“Several groups have already expressed a strong interest in buying the Alouettes, including groups whose members live or work in Montreal or in the province of Quebec,” said the CFL.

This step would thus end the association of the team with the estate of Sid Spiegel and with Gary Stern. Spiegel and Stern had purchased the team in 2020, but following Spiegel’s death in 2021, team operations were crippled by succession proceedings.

The CFL said it will provide further updates as needed and appropriate.

These announcements came the same day the CFL free agent market opened.

This is the second time since 2019 that the Alouettes have been placed under guardianship by the league.
