The Canadian Football League fined the Montreal Alouettes and three other teams on Friday.
The CFL said in a statement that the Alouettes, Ottawa Redblacks, Toronto Argonauts and Winnipeg Blue Bombers all exceeded the C$5.35 million salary expense cap in 2022. .
The league said all four teams exceeded the cap by less than $100,000 and were fined $1 for every dollar spent over the cap.
A CFL team could have lost a first-round draft pick if they went over the cap between $100,000 and $299,999.99 and two first-round picks for spending $300,000 or more.
The order of the CFL draft, scheduled for May 2, will therefore remain unchanged. The Alouettes hold the fifth and seventh overall picks in the first round.
The Alouettes were fined $794, the smallest of the four teams penalized. The Blue Bombers were penalized the most with a $64,499 fine.
“The monitoring and verification process of the salary management system includes a detailed audit carried out with the nine clubs at the end of the season. Teams are required to provide regular updates on the level of compensation paid after six games, after twelve games and after eighteen games.
The salary expense cap for the 2023 season has been set at $5.45 million.
