Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin failed in the country’s legislative elections on Sunday April 2. The centre-right comes first in the vote. To form a coalition, the leader of the party explained not to exclude an alliance with the extreme right.
In Finland, at the end of an election which was played in a pocket handkerchief, the outgoing Prime Minister recognizes her defeat, Sunday April 2. The results of the legislative elections are very close, but the center-right is the big winner. The leader of the National Coalition Party in power will have to find allies to govern, and he does not rule out seeking some from the far right.
A possible alliance with the far right
Petteri Orpo also wanted not to offend these potential allies. “We don’t have a far-right party in Finland. We have the True Finns party, but they are not extreme right. That’s why I’m so ready to negotiate with them“, he declared. This victory is a real disavowal of the policy pursued by Sanna Marin. During his mandate, the country notably broke with its Russian neighbor following the invasion of Ukraine, and it is preparing to join NATO, but it is above all the country’s entry into recession that has worried the Finns.
