Thursday, May 5, three leaders of Castel Meats will be tried in the Nantes court (Loire-Atlantique) for deception. They are accused of selling spoiled meat.
In 2008, Pierre Hinard, former quality manager of Castel Viandes, denounced the “repack”, that is, the reuse of spoiled meat by slaughterhouses. He worked for a slaughterhouse, Castel Viandes, accused of supplying unfit meat to restaurants and supermarkets. “There, we were playing with people’s lives”, he recalls. Three managers of the slaughterhouse have been implicated and will appear in court in Nantes (Loire-Atlantique), Thursday, May 5. For Benoît Chabert, lawyer for Castel Viandes, the brand has never practiced “repack”.
Since this affair, veterinary checks in slaughterhouses have remained opaque. Moreover, the team of France Télévisions could not attend. “Checks in the cutting workshop are twice a year maximum. But clearly, to have sufficient pressure, it would take three, four times more”claims Nicolas Revault, slaughterhouse hygiene inspector for the SNUITAM union.
