The Carrefour group has decided to grant 12 days of absence per year to women in the company suffering from endometriosis. This is a first, on such a scale.

It is the first major French group to take a decision of this magnitude. Carrefour will grant from the summer one day off per month to its employees suffering from endometriosis. “It hurts a lot, being on the shelves doubled over, still standing, I don’t think it’s a good idea. It would allow them to be at home, and they would suffer less at work”, says an employee. 50,000 women work for the group in France.

A few SMEs have introduced menstrual leave

To benefit from it, employees must present proof. In France, some SMEs already grant menstrual leave. This is also the case of an association in Roubaix (Nord), which has 12 employees, including nine women. They can take one day per month, without proof. Since the implementation in January, two employees have used the leave. In February, Spain became the first European country to introduce menstrual leave.
