The leader of the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ), François Legault, promises to make “the largest tax cut in the history of Quebec”. To achieve this, it will first decree, for the year 2023, a drop of one percentage point in the first two tax brackets.
According to CAQ calculations, a Quebecer earning $80,000 would roughly pay $629 less in taxes per year.
This is the first measure of the “anti-inflation shield” created by François Legault’s team so that Quebecers can better weather the blows of the rising cost of living. The price of groceries alone jumped 9% between July 2021 and July 2022.
An annual decrease of 0.25% of the first two tax brackets would follow until 2032, can we read in the CAQ plan.
It is “a responsible tax cut for the middle class”, argued François Legault, during a stop in the riding of Jean-Talon on Monday morning.
“This tax cut will help us increase our economic growth, promote participation in the labor market and therefore help reduce our wealth gap,” added the candidate in Groulx, Eric Girard.
The CAQ will finance this tax reduction from the payments provided for in the Generations Fund. François Legault’s team sees it as “a responsible way to help Quebecers while preserving the stability of funding for state missions such as health and education, and ensuring the government’s financial strength in the long term.” .
