The Capitals come from behind and beat the Devils 6-4

(Newark) Connor McMichael broke a tie in the third period and the Washington Capitals beat the New Jersey Devils 6-4 on Wednesday night.


McMichael scored his second goal of the season to give the Capitals a 5-4 lead at 2:09 of the final period. Dylan Strome had just tied the game 4-4, 18 seconds earlier.

Alex Ovechkin completed the scoring into an empty net, scoring his second goal of the campaign and the 824e of her career.

Hunter Shepard made 18 saves in his NHL debut, allowing the Capitals to begin the comeback. They scored the first three goals of the game before seeing the Devils score the next four.

The 27-year-old Shepard, the Calder Cup playoff MVP last spring, bounced back after a tough second period.

Anthony Mantha and Sonny Milano also scored for the Capitals. Strome finished the game with two goals.

Tyler Toffoli threaded the needle on two occasions for the Devils, who were coming back from a victory against the Montreal Canadiens. Timo Meier and Nico Hischier also scored in a losing cause.

Jack Hughes set up three of his team’s four goals. He leads the NHL with 17 points in just six games.

Akira Schmid started the game for the Devils and he gave up three times in eight shots before being replaced by Vitek Vanecek. The latter stopped 14 pucks.
