The Canadian | Four-year contract for Alex Newhook

Acquired by the Canadian three weeks ago, Alex Newhook agreed Tuesday morning on the terms of a four-year contract which will earn him an average of $ 2.9 million per season.

Here is another file settled for Kent Hughes.

Newhook, whose National League entry contract expired at the end of last season, was acquired from the Colorado Avalanche in late June in return for two draft picks and the minor league defenseman Gianni Fairbrother.

Selected in the first round of the 2019 draft by the Avalanche, the 22-year-old was struggling to hatch in Denver. He nevertheless played in all 82 games for the club last year and participated in the conquest of the Stanley Cup in 2022. In 159 career NHL games, he scored 66 points, including 27 goals.

The day of Newhook’s acquisition, Habs general manager Kent Hughes said the addition was “along the same lines” as Kirby Dach’s last year, in that both players experienced a beginning of a career that does not live up to expectations. Their agreement with the Canadian is also much the same, while Dach signed a four-year contract last year for an average of 3.362 million per season.

Hughes has touted his new striker for his “versatility”, “tempo”, “speed” and “character”. Above all, “we think he still has a lot of potential”, added the DG.
