Arber Xhekaj was fined by the National League for unsportsmanlike conduct for his actions in Saturday’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In the first period of the Canadian’s 2-1 defeat, Xhekaj tried to engage in a fight with Cédric Paré. A few moments earlier, the latter had collided with Canadian striker Patrik Laine, who left the match with an injured left leg. Paré refused to fight.
For his actions, Xhekaj is therefore fined $3,385.42, the maximum allowed in the collective agreement.

Xhekaj a écopé d’une pénalité mineure (avoir été l’instigateur), d’une pénalité majeure (pour s’être battu) de même que de deux pénalités de 10 minutes pour inconduite. Il a été chassé du match et les Maple Leafs ont bénéficié de sept minutes d’avantage numérique.
Les arbitres n’ont pas pénalisé Paré pour son geste à l’endroit de Laine. « Je pense que c’était une punition », a opiné l’entraîneur-chef du Canadien, Martin St-Louis.
« Je ne pense pas qu’il faille jouer au hockey bottine en présaison […]but I don’t think there’s room for a knee strike either. It doesn’t matter who it is, it’s not a good play,” defenseman Mike Matheson said.
CH captain Nick Suzuki felt that Paré “stretched his leg”, while defender David Savard said he did not believe that Paré “did it on purpose” to extend his knee.
As of Sunday noon, the Canadian has not offered an update on Laine. The team is entitled to a training break on Sunday and will resume action Monday morning in Brossard.
