According to journalist Michael Russo, of The Athletic, Scott Mellanby has resigned as assistant general manager of the Canadiens.

A few minutes earlier, Sportsnet informant Elliotte Friedman reported that the Habs had obtained permission from the New York Rangers to speak with Jeff Gorton, their former GM. It wouldn’t be for the CEO job, according to Friedman.

Mellanby joined the Canadiens in the summer of 2012, following the hiring of Bergevin. First director of players’ personnel, he was promoted to assistant GM in 2014.

Mellanby was one of two people who held the title of assistant general manager at the Canadiens, the other being Trevor Timmins, the main official in the draft.
