Hecatomb at the Canadiens: The names of five players and an assistant coach have been added to the NHL’s COVID-19 watchlist.
And these are not the least. They are goaltender Jake Allen as well as defenders Ben Chiarot, Jeff Petry, Chris Wideman and Joel Edmundson – although the injured one was not due to play in the short term. Eric Raymond, goalkeeper coach, also had to isolate himself from the rest of the team.
This group thus joins Laurent Dauphin, Mike Hoffman, Artturi Lehkonen and Tyler Toffoli (injured), already in isolation.
During Monday morning training at the Bell complex in Brossard, we have already seen some of the replacements added to the reserve squad. The NHL and the Players’ Association announced on Sunday the return of these squads, created last season to allow teams to have increased numbers in the event of COVID-19 outbreaks.
Forwards Brandon Baddock and Cam Hillis, as well as reserve goaltender Michael McNiven, are all in attendance. The fourth member of this group, defender Gianni Fairbrother, is not there, however.
The team has officially recalled goaltender Cayden Primeau and defenseman Corey Schueneman from the Laval Rocket. The whole team will fly to Tampa in the afternoon to face the Lightning on Tuesday.
The Canadiens’ last game dates back to December 16; he had then signed a victory against the Philadelphia Flyers. His next four games against the Boston Bruins at home, then on the road against the New York Islanders, New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils, have all been postponed.
The team has not trained for eight days. The organization put all its activities on hiatus on Monday, December 20.
