The public audiovisual unions called for a strike on Tuesday, June 28, to protest against the plan to abolish the license fee. “The government, today, did not present any concrete way to compensate for the abolition of the fee (…) he said ‘it will be taken from the State budgett”, worries a woman. Candidate, Emmanuel Macron had undertaken to abolish the royalty for the purchasing power of the French and this measure should appear on the government bill.

The fee was created in 1933 for radio, then extended to television in 1949. In France, 23 million households with a television are subject to it. They pay 138 euros per year, which brings in 3.2 billion euros. The tax makes it possible to finance various public media: France Televisions, Radio France, Arte or France 24, as well as cinema. “Without royalties, that is to say without earmarked contribution, there is a threat to the independence“, says Julia Cagé, professor of economics.
