Who will go up to Ligue 1? The Professional Football League (LFP) unveiled this Friday the 2022-2023 Ligue 2 calendar. The 20 teams in the championship will compete this season during the 38 days and 380 matches distributed between July 30, 2022 and June 2, 2023.
This season, Laval and Annecy climb in Ligue 2 while Nancy, Dunkirk are relegated to National.
Saint-Etienne, Metz and Bordeaux will evolve in Ligue 2 the coming season. For the moment, the Girondins have been administratively demoted to National by the DNCG. The club appealed the decision. The club is replaced by the mention XXX in the general calendar published below.
A season turned upside down by the World Cup in Qatar
As in Ligue 1, the championship will be turned upside down by the World Cup in Qatar, which is being held at an unprecedented time of the year, from November 21 to December 18. The 15th day, which will be held on the weekend of November 12, will be the last before the international break. The championship will resume exceptionally on December 27, in the form of a “boxing day”. The 17th day will be held on January 1, 2023.
Change of promotion and relegation rules
The rules for promotion and relegation will be different this season in Ligue 2. There will be no play-offs at the end of the championship. The bottom four clubs in Ligue 1 will descend to Ligue 2, while the top two in Ligue 2 will move up to the next level. Same pattern for the last four of Ligue 2 which will be relegated to National while the first two of National will go up to Ligue 2. Ligue 1 will therefore only have 18 clubs from 2023-2024. It will be necessary to wait until 2024-2025 for Ligue 2 to experience the same fate.
