The Bureau of the National Assembly validated on Tuesday, September 17, the procedure for the impeachment of the President of the Republic brought by LFI, franceinfo learned from parliamentary sources. 12 members of the body voted for, 10 against. The Bureau of the Assembly is composed of 22 members with a small majority for the New Popular Front (12 members).

The highest executive body of the Assembly has thus validated the admissibility of this motion of dismissal, the first step to then send it to the Laws Committee. But the procedure for dismissing the president is still long and uncertain. This step is indeed the first in a long series for a procedure that is difficult to adopt, which would require the approval of two thirds of the parliamentarians of the Assembly and the Senate, meeting in the High Court. However, the parliamentarians of the center and the right have few reasons to support this initiative, while the appointment of Michel Barnier as Prime Minister puts them back at the heart of the political game.

The text of the Insoumis states in particular that Emmanuel Macron’s refusal to appoint Lucie Castets, NFP candidate, to Matignon constitutes “a serious breach of the duty to respect the will expressed by universal suffrage”noting that the left-wing alliance came out on top in the legislative elections (193 seats). In addition, the initiative is not unanimous on the left. The PS deputies consider the procedure doomed “to failure” and therefore believe that it risks “give new legitimacy” to Emmanuel Macron. The rebels, on the other hand, believe it is possible and are increasing the pressure, with their elected representatives eagerly relaying a petition whose counter displayed more than 305,000 signatures on Monday evening.

Invited to franceinfo on Tuesday morning, Manuel Bompard already put forward the name of a ready-made candidate to replace Emmanuel Macron. “If it were to happen tomorrow, Jean-Luc Mélenchon is the best placed person”the rebellious coordinator had advanced.
