The budget for the construction of Espace Riopelle at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (MNBAQ) increases to $84 million, double compared to the first estimates when launching this project at the beginning of the decade.
The sharp upward revision was revealed Thursday by the Quebec government at the same time as the result of the call for tenders launched on December 7. Three firms submitted complete files. The contract offered to the lowest bidder goes to the Quebec firm CONCREA, which will work according to the plans of the architectural firm FABG.
Work should begin this spring with the aim of inauguration of the new pavilion in 2026.
Quebec explains the significant increase in the projected budget by a more precise estimate of construction costs using the now complete specifications.
The Quebec Ministry of Culture and Communications will provide 44 million, and the City of Quebec 5 million. Patrons of the Jean Paul Riopelle Foundation will add a legacy of 20 to 25 million. The MNBAQ Foundation is committed to adding to the financial package with a contribution of 10 million. Espace Riopelle will house more than 500 works by the artist born in Montreal in 1923.
