In the forest, they are recognized by their brown uniform and their crest. In Brocéliande (Ille-et-Vilaine), Clémentin Thébault and Kevin Laniot are there to ensure respect for the environment. This year, the eco-guards are particularly vigilant. Their obsession is to prevent any outbreak of fire. In July and August 2022, Brittany had experienced a nightmarish summer with record fires in the Arrée mountains. At the beginning of August, 4,000 hectares had gone up in smoke in Brocéliande.

“We feel helpless”

The traces of these fires are still visible in the landscape. Memories are still fresh in the minds of the guardians of the forest. “It’s really impressive when you’re not used to these scenes. You feel helpless”, remembers Clémentin Thébault. Contrary to popular belief, the Breton forest is a place more prone to fires than the Mediterranean rim.
