Paris 2024: the magical crossing of the Olympic flame through the Corinth Canal
The Olympic flame left Athens to reach France. On board the “Belem”, the crew and the 20 Hours team experienced the exceptional opening of the Corinth Canal.
(France 2)

Ten days before its arrival in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), the Olympic flame crossed the Corinth Canal (Greece) aboard the “Belem”. An exceptional moment experienced by the 20 Hours team.

The commander of Belem had promised the crew an unforgettable time. The old three-masted ship enters the Corinth Canal (Greece). The cliffs exceed 50 meters in height. The canal dug at the end of the 19th century was closed for work, but was exceptionally opened for the passage of the Olympic flame, which travels from Greece to Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône). On the decks, the public came to greet the sailors and the guardians of the flame.

The crossing is a success

Professional sailors enjoy this extremely rare event of life at sea, but the maneuver is delicate because of the 24 meters width of the canal. After 40 minutes and 6 km, the crossing is a real success. THE Belem finds the open sea and dolphins very interested in the role of guardian of the flame. On the program for the continuation of the crossing of the flame, the Strait of Messina (Italy), then the mouths of Bonifacio (South Corsica).
