A fire destroyed 1,000 hectares, between Avignon and Tarascon, Thursday July 14. The accident could have been triggered by sparks during the braking of a train. An investigation has been opened, and the mayors of the four municipalities concerned will file a complaint against the SNCF.

On the morning of Friday July 15, the fire resumed on the Montagnette massif: more than 1,000 hectares covered, in three communes in the Bouches-du-Rhône. During the night, more than 1,000 firefighters were mobilized, supported by reinforcements from other departments. They fought to save a 12th century abbey and the surrounding dwellings. The ballet of air assets resumed in the morning.

The fire broke out in the afternoon of Thursday July 14, along the railway line which connects Tarascon to Graveson (Bouches-du-Rhône). It would have been triggered by the passage of a freight train. The mayors of the municipalities concerned are angry. “I am very, very bitter. We feared it would happen. We will most likely file a complaint against the people we consider responsible for what has just happened, (…) a priori the SNCF”, confides Jean-Christophe Daudet, the mayor (without label) of Barbentane (Bouches-du-Rhône). An investigation was opened for involuntary fire.
