Inclusive writing: the Senate slows down

Inclusive writing could no longer be used in administrative documents after the vote, on the night of Monday October 30 to Tuesday October 31, of a new law in the Senate.
It’s a little sentence from Emmanuel Macron, Monday October 30, in Villers-Cotterêts (Aisne), which did not go unnoticed. “In this language, the masculine is neuter, we don’t need to add dots in the middle of words or hyphens or things to make it readable”, indicated the President of the Republic. Strong words that made the political class react. “There is nothing neutral about the masculine. However, it is not complicated”said EELV MP Sandrine Rousseau on the social network X.
Avoid politicizing the language
The controversy comes at a time when senators have just voted on a bill aimed at banning inclusive writing. For his rapporteur, the objective is to avoid, he says, politicizing the language. Since 2017, a circular from Édouard Philippe has already restricted the use of inclusive writing. The text voted on last night aims to extend this ban. Many areas are targeted: instructions for use, employment contracts, internal company regulations but also legal acts, which would then be inadmissible if the measure is applied.
