Grenoble, Strasbourg, and now Lyon: one after the other, environmentalist town halls are banning foie gras in official receptions. These boycotts are causing producers to react, as in the Périgueux market, in the Dordogne.

The ecological municipalities of Grenoble (Isère), Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin), Villeurbanne (Rhône) and Lyon (Rhône) have all made the same announcement: no more foie gras in official receptions. The news makes you roll your eyes in the capital of Périgord. “It’s an aberration”, says a man, while a woman quips: “By dint of removing everything, it will be more worth living.” The town halls concerned advance as the main reason that the production of foie gras would be incompatible with animal welfare.

The argument is swept away by the producers present on the Périgueux market. “Animals are not mistreated, on the contrary, otherwise we would not be as successful in the markets”, assure Fabrice Dumas, breeder in Rouffignac (Dordogne). “Those who criticize do not know what we are doing. We raise our animals, we feed them with care, if we mistreated the animals, we would have bad results”, advance meanwhile Jean-Claude Dartenset, breeder in Manzac-sur-Vern (Dordogne).
