A judicial investigation into the fire which destroyed nearly 14,000 hectares in Landiras (Gironde) was opened this Friday, July 22 by the Bordeaux prosecutor’s office, announced the public prosecutor in a press release. There “criminal thesis” is privileged to explain the outbreak of this fire.

“Two investigating magistrates have been appointed to jointly investigate this open case on the counts of destruction by fire of woods, forests, moors, maquis, plantations or reforestation of others likely to expose people to bodily harm and create a irreversible damage to the environment“, develops the prosecutor. For these facts, the penalty incurred is 15 years of criminal imprisonment and a fine of 150,000 euros.
Ten investigators, from the Langon research brigade and the Bordeaux research section, have already been mobilized for this investigation. A man had been taken into custody as part of this investigation before being released and exonerated.
The Landiras and Teste-de-Buch fires have destroyed nearly 21,000 hectares of forest in Gironde since July 12. “The fire is contained, but not fixed“, declared this Friday on franceinfo the prefect of the department Fabienne Buccio.
