The Bombette

Bruno Garcia from the Charente-Maritime fishing federation makes life easier for fishermen every weekend on France Bleu la Rochelle and invites you to discover the “Bombette” technique today.

The Bombette, a “made in Italy” invention

Bruno Garcia: Don’t worry, it’s not about blowing up anything, my intention is to make life easier for fishermen who don’t have a boat. The bombette at sea or in the river is a revolutionary technique. It will make your fishing trips more efficient by prospecting wider and above all further. It is an invention that we owe to the Italians who developed it to search for trout in the lake where it is very interesting to cast as far as possible.

How to define it?

If we had to find an ancestor, it would surely be the buldo, indeed the bombette allows you to practice at all depths. It has an elongated, aerodynamic shape, it could be likened to a small cylinder which has a slight bulge at its end, its shape is very similar to the large floats used for match fishing. It is found in different colors, but this criterion remains of little importance. The choice of your bombette will be made according to the depth at which you want to fish. You will take a floating bombette if you want to fish near the surface, a semi-diving one to fish between two waters or a diving one for proximity to the bottom. Each type of bombette therefore evolves at a different depth, which allows you to fish the places most encumbered by vegetation and in addition in a much slower way than a traditional assembly. Let me explain, in two meters of water on a bottom strewn with pitfalls, you can use a bomb that does not dive beyond 1.50 meters.

Other benefits?

Yes, of course, and not least, the spoons or small soft lures do not allow very long casts. Thanks to this utensil you will be able to propel your assembly much further. It’s up to you to adapt the weight of your bombette to the conditions of the moment. Be careful despite everything, the heavier your bomb will be, the less discreet it will be when it hits the surface. The “splash” caused at this precise moment can frighten the fish. Your throw should be low enough, throwing too high will accentuate this nuisance.

What is the target?

You can target all species of fish, since you can use a lure, such as a livebait or an earthworm. The most frequent use is for mullet with a spinner and a sea worm, hard or semi-hard.

The assembly of the line

We do not put the hook directly on the bombette, it is, as for a float, the main line which passes inside. You will therefore need a leader, more or less long depending on the bait used. Avoid long lengths when you use a very vigorous live fish, such as the gudgeon or the rudd, too much freedom would allow it to go very quickly to take refuge under a branch or a seagrass.
