Antoine Dupont and his teammates won gold in the final tournament of the World Series in Madrid against Argentina (19-5). The Blues have to be content with silver after their defeat against Australia (26-7).
The knives, the men and women of rugby sevens are sharpening two months before the Paris Games. The two French teams were involved in the final of the final tournament of the World Series, in Madrid, Sunday June 2. A revelation, since it was the last deadline before the summer. The Blues won against Argentina (19-5) and left crowned with gold. For the Blues, it will be silver, after their defeat against Australia (26-7). This is the first time that the French team has won the world circuit.
It hadn’t started in the best way for the Blues, who were quickly surprised by an attempt at Luciano González. The French responded just before half-time thanks to Stephen Parez-Edo Martin. At the break, the Tricolores were leading 7-5 when Antoine Dupont came into play, a tactic which until now has paid off in each match of the blue septists since the start of this final tournament of the world circuit, in order to bring its explosiveness.
Titled last Saturday in the Champions Cup before being released by his club, the scrum half from Stade Toulouse, after a magnificent commotion, notably delivered a marvelous assist to his captain, the Gersois Paulin Riva, for the third try of the Blues, synonymous with victory.
For Jérôme Daret, this result is “very important for us before the Olympic Games”even if the French coach weighs: “The next tournament, in Paris, will be a different story!” As for Antoine Dupont, he is “the best player in the world, quite simplysays Paulin Riva. When he’s on the pitch, he gives us a lot of confidence.”
The Australians, Olympic champions in Rio in 2016, had already beaten the Tricolores in the groups on Saturday (28-14), as well as in the final during the South African stage of the world circuit in December. The teammates of Anne-Cécile Ciofani, injured in the first minutes of the match at the Metropolitano stadium, suffered throughout the meeting, which notably saw Australian Maddison Levi score a hat-trick.
