The blue economy: at the heart of Novarium’s mission

Novarium is an innovation campus dedicated to accelerating the blue economy and democratizing knowledge across Quebec.

Located in Rimouski, near the affiliated research centres, this organization brings together more than 600 researchers. From artificial intelligence to biofood and intelligent navigation, the projects they develop there will greatly contribute to building a sustainable economy in which the preservation of marine ecosystems is central.

According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the blue economy market will reach US$3 trillion in 2030. It includes algae farming, biotechnology, data management, sustainable fishing and maritime transport. smart (worldwide, more than 80% of manufactured goods transit by sea).

A community of committed researchers

The blue economy: at the heart of Novarium's mission

Novarium’s mission revolves around three main areas: marine biotechnology, maritime engineering and ocean artificial intelligence.

A community has therefore been formed through collaborations and partnerships with various renowned research centers and academics: Maritime Innovation, Rimouski Institute of Marine Sciences, Marine Biotechnology Research Center, Merinov, CIDCO (Interdisciplinary Center for development in ocean mapping), the University of Quebec in Rimouski and Mila (Quebec Institute of Artificial Intelligence), in Montreal.

The MARS project clearly represents the desire of research partners and industry to implement innovative and sustainable technological solutions that will transform the way we interact with the oceans.

Launched in 2020, this underwater acoustic station offering unique components aims to measure the sound impact of the passage of a ship on the ecosystem. To achieve this, vibration sensors are currently collecting data from the vessels of four major St. Lawrence shipowners.
