The black vulture is back in the department of Ain. A small raptor was born as part of a European breeding program. He may one day be released into the wild.
The assisted hatching will have lasted nearly 24 hours, the time to bring a black vulture out of its shell. He was born at the Parc des Oiseaux nursery in Villars-les-Dombes (Ain). This event is accompanied by concerns. “The baby vulture was in a breech. […] These young chicks, if not helped, die inside the egg. Afterwards, it’s up to us to take over and cut [la coquille]. […] We placed him under his mother”explains Christophe Bec, an animal manager.
64 birds released
After its first peck to get out, the vulture found the warmth of a home. There is no question of seeing more. This delicate adaptation phase is supervised by the park veterinarian who is kept at a distance. Only the caregivers approach to bring food to the new family and the neighbors, two other couples, also about to give birth. The European breeding program for the species has had encouraging results. Since 1986, 64 birds have been released between Spain and the Cévennes, up to the Balkans.
