United States: the Biltmore estate, the most French castle in America
United States: the Biltmore estate, the most French castle in America – (France 2)
A French castle was erected in North Carolina, United States. Biltmore Castle is reminiscent of the architectural gems of our heritage.
At first glance, it’s hard to believe that Biltmore Castle belongs to the United States. In Asheville, North Carolina, its silhouette is familiar to French tourists. The architecture of the estate is inspired by the treasures of the Loire castles. The steps are even copies of the François I staircase at the Château de Blois (Loir-et-Cher), explains guide Christiane Johnson. It shows two statues, representing Joan of Arc and Saint-Louis. The gargoyles are reminiscent of those of Notre-Dame Cathedral.
A mix of cultures and eras
The interior of the estate displays a mixture of cultures and eras. But France occupies a special place in decoration, particularly in the library. The owner at the time, from the very wealthy Vanderbilt family, had an admiration for Paris. An Art Deco swimming pool, in the basement, still recalls the American origins of its creator. A century later, the property remains the largest in the United States. Thanks to its charm, Biltmore Castle has served as a setting for many films.
