Six months after a devastating outbreak, India has just administered its billionth dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. Three-quarters of adults have received an injection, according to the government.
To celebrate the billionth injection of the Covid-19 vaccine in India, the staff of a vaccination center drew a mural on the ground. Only China did better today. “Reaching the billion doses means that we have protected a large part of our population”, comments Dr Gagandeep Kour of the Christian Medical College.
India, however, has come a long way. At the start of 2021, the country is overwhelmed by the second wave of Covid-19. Hospitals are overcrowded, like crematoriums. The number of bonfires organized in the middle of the street is indicative of an unprecedented health crisis, killing thousands every day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi then launched a gigantic vaccination campaign. “The first vaccines will be for those who need them the most”, he said last January.
