The bill on the future of agriculture, postponed by the farmers’ angry movement, was presented to the Council of Ministers on Wednesday April 3.
Announced multiple times, postponed several times, the text finally presented is the pride of the government. “The course is quite simple, it is that of sovereignty and food security. Agriculture is recognized as being of major general interest”, declared Marc Fesneau, Minister of Agriculture. While the objective is to appease the agricultural protest, the FNSEA, the government’s main interlocutor, is in any case won over. “We expected the major general interest and we supported it very strongly during these mobilizations. What is also important is the issue of food sovereignty”assures Luc Smessaert, vice-president of the union.
A call for mobilization
Conversely, the Peasant Confederation was not convinced by their plan for food sovereignty and denounced a lack of ecological ambition. Rural Coordination also points out the absence of the economic component. She calls for agricultural mobilization in view of the European elections.
