The year started rather well for Riad Sattouf. This Wednesday, January 25, 2023, the cartoonist known for his comic strip “The Arab of the Future”, received the Grand Prix of the Angoulême Festival on the occasion of the opening night of the International Comics Festival (FIBD ). Following this victory, Riad Sattouf shared his trophy on his Instagram account, expressing his joy: “I still can’t realize… I who have never been elected from anything, apart from the ugliest boy in my class in college. Joy and happiness!”
Happy, he also did not fail to thank his loved ones: “Thank you to everyone here, for your messages, your charming words, your thoughts, your love since yesterday! goes straight to the heart. I share this Grand Prize with you, and moreover I award you the Grand Prize for readers.
The day after this victory, a few tweeters have unfortunately darkened the picture. For several days now, on the social network, Riad Sattouf’s comic strip “Back to college” has been described as “shocking”. Some Internet users have not hesitated to post photos of drawings where we can see young girls in panties being whipped on a desk by a teacher.

Still on Twitter, the reactions are numerous and: “Riad Sattouf, Not only does he admit to fantasizing about 13-year-old girls, but he also draws them in sexualized, almost naked ways”, or even: “Ah Riad Sattouf, it was not he who had drawn his fantasies on children while he was a speaker in a college, judging them physically beautiful / “soft”, drew them naked / bra / thong?.
This is not the first time that a cartoonist has been accused of child pornography. Last year it was Bastien Vivès who had been taken in dislike for his drawings in his comics “Le Petit Paul” and “The mental discharge”. His exhibition at the FIBD had also been canceled last December. It remains to be seen whether Riad Sattouf will share the same fate…
